CUTTING-EDGE TECHNOLOGIES FROM THE MAZDA CX-5 TOOK THE STAGE IN BRUSSELS AT A EURO NCAP EVENT

Leverkusen, 14 June 2012. Demonstrating its strong commitment to safety, Mazda exhibited the autonomous emergency braking (AEB) system featured on its all-new CX-5 at an AEB event held on 13 June at Autoworld Brussels.

Organised by Euro NCAP*, the event featured automakers like Mazda with AEB-equipped vehicles, including live demonstrations and test drives. Euro NCAP presented the results of a survey of the various systems available and their market penetration in Europe. Afterwards, automotive professionals and experts along with EU policymakers and other stakeholders discussed the progress and safety benefits of these systems.

The CX-5, a compact crossover SUV, is the first Mazda equipped with Smart City Brake Support (SCBS), an innovative new AEB system that uses a near-infrared sensor on the windscreen to monitor preceding vehicles. SCBS automatically engages the brakes in emergency situations at speeds of up to 30km/h, thus helping to avoid collisions or at least minimise potential injuries and damage. All coming Mazda models will be available with SCBS.

“The CX-5 was the only SUV at the event, so it was an excellent opportunity to show how committed we are at Mazda to preventing accidents using a combination of state-of-the-art active and passive safety technology,” said Jeff Guyton, President and CEO Mazda Motor Europe.

The CX-5 unites pioneering active safety systems like SCBS and Mazda’s new Lane Departure Warning System with unique passive safety structures including the lightweight yet highly rigid SKYACTIV-Body. Mazda’s newest model was recently awarded the maximum rating of five stars by Euro NCAP, officially confirming that it is one of the safest cars available today.
